Class of 2019 Grand Finale Celebration

On Feb. 26, over 550 people filled the room at The Minneapolis Event Centers to celebrate the outstanding achievements of the 2019 Students of the Year candidates. 

2019 was the second year for the Twin Cities program and we had 14 teams (16 high school students) participating in the 7-week fundraiser and the results were OUTSTANDING!  The Class of 2019 raised over $408,000.00!!!!

Brianna Torgerson, 2019 Student of the Year

Congratulations to Brianna Torgerson, a sophomore at Southwest Christian High School in Chaska, for earning the title of 2019 Student of the Year.  Brianna raised over $90,000 and received a $2,500 college scholarship. 

This year we had three students, Grant Albin, Saunder Strong and Brianna Torgerson, who each raised over $50,000.  In recognition of their achievement, they received the Fundraiser Recognition Award. This award allows them to link the name of a loved one to a current LLS funded research grant. 

Additionally, three students received Citizenship Awards based on the effort they displayed during the campaign. Each of these students will receive a $500 college scholarship. The winners were:

Courtney Chase for Mission Integration

Honored Hero - Blakely

Blakely is one of our Honored Heroes for the 2019 Students of the Year Campaign. She is 9 years old and has AML. Blakely started the battle for her life while on life support in July of 2011 at the tender age of 18 months. Being the fighter that she is she battled it a second time 19 months later and is now cancer free after her stem cell transplant.

Honored Hero - Blake

Blake is one of our Honored Heroes for the 2019 Students of the Year Campaign. Blake is 9 years old and has ALL. In January of 2018, Blake began a three-year treatment plan to fight his ALL. He loves to play baseball and video games. Blake brings tons of energy and a strong desire to help others to our NWA Chapter.

2019 Jacksonville Students of The Year Grand Finale

Join the 2019 Jacksonville Students of The Year Candidates at The Grand Finale Gala! The Gala will be the culmination event for our 2019 Man & Woman of the Year and Students of the Year Campaigns. The night will begin with a silent auction and cocktail reception and move into a delicious dinner and auction. Once the auctions close, we will announce our Man & Woman and Student(s) of the Year. Join us for this fun, exciting, memorable, life-changing night!

 

19 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS RAISE OVER $633,776 TO HELP THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY CALIFORNIA SOUTHLAND CHAPTER FIGHT CANCER

Los Angeles, California, March 1, 2019 - 19 local high school philanthropists collectively raised $633,776 in the 3rd Annual 2019 Students of the Year Los Angeles Campaign.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) California Southland Chapter hosted their 3rd Annual Los Angeles Students of the Year Campaign Grand Finale Celebration at the Taglyan Complex.  The evening included a silent auction, cocktail hour, dinner and an inspiring program celebrating local high school philanthropists. 

Eva Hooten of team When Pigs Fly: Making the Impossible Possible, was recognized as the 2019 Los Angeles Students of the Year. The runner up was Skylar Takac of Al’s Angels. The Citizenship Awards were presented to Mackenzie Aladjem of Aladjem’s Angels for Mission, Kate Kilroy of A Cure for Stella for Leadership and Stephanie Wong of Cure Collective for Philanthropy. Individual results will be posted once all national Student of the Year Campaigns are complete.

The evening’s festivities were hosted by Fox 11’s morning news anchor Elex Michaelson, with guest presenters 2018 Student of the Year alumni Camille Jacobellis, Caroline Novia, and 2018 Student of the Year title winner, Caleb Moss.

Mission speakers at the event included:

  • 2019 Students of the Year Honored Hero Rafael Sanchez, a 13 year old acute lymphocytic leukemia survivor, shared his story and congratulated the 2019 candidates on their efforts to continue raising funds that would benefit both research and patient services for cancer patients.
  • Mike Teitell, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, spoke of the great research partnership between UCLA and LLS and what today’s medical advances in cancer research has done for today's cancer patients and how critical it is to fund state of the art treatment and research to find cures for blood cancer research.



ABOUT STUDENTS OF THE YEAR

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Students of the Year is an exciting leadership development and philanthropy program in which high school students participate in a fundraising competition to benefit LLS. Every dollar raised counts as one vote. The candidates/teams who raise the most money at the end of the 7-week competition earn the title Student(s) of the Year. For motivated high school students, this program ensures they stand out among their peers when engaging with colleges and/or future employers. Through guidance and mentoring from experienced professionals at LLS they will make a real impact in the fight against blood cancers.
